Brand Signage for President's Speech

Business Roundtable's brand served as a backdrop for the President's speech to the association's CEO members in December 2012. Working under an extremely tight deadline, Doug worked with staff to translate the BRT brand that we developed in 2009 into a blue, camera-friendly backdrop. Business Roundtable is an association of chief executive officers of leading U.S. companies with nearly $6 trillion in annual revenues and more than 13 million employees worldwide.

Alina - Identity

Doug was asked to develop a simple but elegant logo for a Los Angeles-based stylist, Alina Ratta, incorporating her initials. With clients all over the world, including well-known celebrities, Alina needed a lasting brand that could be used on a variety of printed and digital materials. It was decided that a simple monogram incorporating a strand of hair as the cross-bar in the "A" be the primary mark, supported by Alina's first name.

Ultimate Health Group - Identity

Doug worked closely with a nationally-respected motivational speaker, Eddie Wilson, to launch the Ultimate Health Group, a Washington DC-based speakers' bureau that promotes personal health and wellness education to a wide spectrum of enterprise clients. BioCatalyst – marketing collateral

With offices in New York City, Cambridge, UK, and Charlottesville, Virginia, BioCatalyst offers early stage European life science companies a unique turn-key approach to management, operations and marketing to help them gain entry into the US life science market.

BioCatalyst's founding principal has built some of the world’s leading biotechnology companies, including

NDSE - Identity and Collateral

We began working with the principals at Network Data Security Experts (NDSE) to create the visual identity and tagline for this Virginia-based technology solutions firm. Formerly known as FE4 Consulting, the Company wanted to re-band itself in order to meet the growing market it now serves. NDSE specializes in network and data security for mid-size companies and nonprofits, and a series of print advertisements and a new website has helped build awareness in their growing markets.

Westhills Company

Westhills Company, a premier developer and custom builder of upscale homes in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, asked Payne & Company to help re-brand their 40+ year-old firm. Westhills had built up a good deal of brand equity with their name and reputation over the years, but their visual identity and collateral material was a far cry from the excellent craftsmanship they had become known for.

After interviewing the principals and senior staff and conducting a thorough review of their marketing materials, signage, and website, it was determined that they were in need of a serious graphic and messaging makeover. Visually, some of the graphic elements and color schemes that had been a part of the company since its inception in 1970 were kept so as not to confuse their existing customer base. However, the graphics were stepped up several notches across all media platforms, and the tagline "Built for Life™" was added to the re-designed corporate logo to remind people of the high quality of their work.

The most visible example of their new brand identity, a website, was developed with ample information about the Company and its staff, and included links to printable flyers of the properties for sale in a variety of communities in the Shenandoah Valley. For more information, please visit Westhills Co.

Business Roundtable

Throughout 2010, 2011 and 2012, we worked on several advocacy initiatives before Congress on behalf of Washington DC-based Business Roundtable, an association of America's top CEOs. The initiatives included education, job creation and the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement, which passed successfully and was signed by President Obama in December 2010. The full page print ads were created and written by Payne & Company and ran in Politico, the National Journal, Roll Call and The Hill. Accompanying digital ads ran in the website counterparts of the publications.

Payne & Company is the advertising agency-of-record for Business Roundtable, an association of chief executive officers of leading U.S. companies with nearly $6 trillion in annual revenues and more than 13 million employees worldwide.

Pacific Chai

Pacific Beverage was a small but rapidly growing company when its principals began searching for a designer with packaging experience to re-design the identity and packaging for its main product, Pacific Chai. Chai is a tea latte made with honey, vanilla, cinnamon and ginger, first popularized in the far east. Pacific Beverage was ready to move to the next level, and it needed a unique, sophisticated look that reflected its higher profile in gourmet coffee shops and retail outlets across the U.S. I directed a team of packaging designers who began the project by re-creating the visual identity, hand-lettereing a bamboo brush wordmark that evoked a far-eastern look and feel. Warm tan striped packaging was then created and the label logo was color-coded to indicate the particular flavor. Result: Pacific Chai raised its profile in 2001-2002, expanding its market base and winning two gold medals from the American Tasting Institute, including "Best of Show" and "Gold Taste Award." The company continued to grow rapidly in 2003-2004, positioning the company for sale in 2004.

Leadership for Life

A branding campaign for Fishburne Military School was designed around dramatic portraits taken by award-winning editorial photographer Robb Scharetg for a Virginia Living cover story. The print advertising utilizes the headline "The Fishburne Experience" defined as "Leadership for Life", a character trait all FMS alumni share. Fishburne, the oldest military boarding school in Virginia and one of the oldest military prep schools in the nation, has produced leaders in a variety of fields since its founding in 1879, including former Virginia Governor Gerald L. Baliles '59, Pulitzer Prize Winner Eugene Gray Payne '38 and billionaire World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) chairman Vincent K. McMahon, Jr. '62. The campaign is part of a long-term awareness building effort designed to increase enrollment and aid in development efforts.

John Tyler CC

Doug directed a talented creative team and crafted the John Tyler campaign theme, “Get Real. Real-World Education” for print and broadcast media. The campaign featured actual students and underscores the College’s commitment to representing a diverse student body. The campaign profiled three John Tyler students and how the College offers “Real-World Education” to those who lead fast-paced family and professional lives outside the classroom. The message had to resonate with the returning student seeking a two-year degree, the working professional seeking technical certification and the traditional student seeking a transfer degree to a four-year university.

The campaign was a success, dramatically increasing John Tyler enrollment over a two-year period. The creative team also received one national and two regional advertising awards for communications excellence.

Walking With Our Wounded

Working with a group of U.S. soldiers who are Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, we created a logo for their cause, Walking With Our Wounded. WWOW is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping wounded veterans of all branches of the military as they re-enter life stateside by providing funds for recreational and social activities. Literally "walking a mile in their shoes", walks to raise funds are planned in several cities across the U.S. The group was started by a U.S. Marine who served as the official liaison for wounded Marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen coming into Landstuhl, Germany, from points in the Middle East. We were honored to provide our services pro bono in appreciation for their service and sacrifices to our country.
